ABSTRACT

In a nation, political representation is significant, and adequate representation will ensure the proper development of all sections of a nation. We talk about a country like India, where the population of women is approximately equal to men, and their representation in the legislature and politics is meagre; women’s issues can be dealt with more adequately by women representatives. Over the last two decades, gender disparities have diminished in domains such as education, healthcare, employment and political representation. However, significant inequalities persist across the nation in various degrees. This study will discuss the political representation of women in India, with insights into the historical background of the problem of low women representation, global women’s representation in politics, the reasons why it is needed, the present situation in India, the impact of the new 106th Constitution Amendment Act, 2023 (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023) and put forth some recommendations.
