ABSTRACT


This paper explores the role of the Public Distribution System (PDS) on consumption and household savings, across different sections of population, in rural and urban Tamil Nadu. PDS is considered as a principal instrument in the hands of State Governments for providing a safety net to the poor against the spiraling rise in prices of essential commodities. In this regard Tamil Nadu sets a model in implementing the PDS as a universal system. PDS is a boon to the people living below the poverty line. PDS is the primary social welfare and anti poverty programme of the Government of India. Here the involvement of the Cooperative Societies is noteworthy, since they cover more than 93 per cent of the FPS in Tamil Nadu. Further, the involvement of women in the distribution network ensures safety and above all reduces the transaction cost. Hence, this channel of distribution can be promoted. The research method followed here is inquiry which deals with both primary and secondary sources of data and various secondary sources are collected from books, journals, articles. a complete of 201 samples has been taken, note of which is taken through a convenient sampling method . The statistical tool which is used here is graphical representation from SPSS Tool and SPSS frequency table. The findings of the research is that amendments and proper implementation of PDS is especially required as the public and victims already suffer as per the response of the public for this research paper . There are various issues with the implementation of the PDS in the state of Tamil Nadu to be further more efficient. The aim of this research is to verify the implementation of the PDS.The results show that amendments and proper implementation of the PDS is efficient in the state of Tamil Nadu.
