The Parody Of Law: A Layered Freedom

Advocate Sreemanjaree Sur, BA LLB, Gujrat National Law University

ABSTRACT

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. In today’s world, however, parody and satire has come under heavy fire for copyright infringement and for overtaxing the bounds of freedom of speech and expression. This has required the courts to step in, to protect this literary tool and parodists from legal persecution in order to promote new ideas and free thinking among the mass. In this article, the author has tried to first explain how parody works as an art form. It is only then we can understand the appropriate response of law to its impact. In the second half, the author deals with various forms of legal protection made available to parodists by the courts in India.
