ABSTRACT
This study explores the lived experiences of children navigating parental divorce in India, tracing the ripple effects from childhood through adulthood. It moves beyond legal frameworks to examine the emotional terrain these children traverse, highlighting the unique challenges they face at different developmental stages. Legal records, survey data, and research all point to a common thread of emotional hardship. We see it in the anxieties of young children, the identity struggles of adolescents, and the burden of broken family ties carried by adults. Notably, it exposes the critical gap in Indian statistical data concerning the mental health of children impacted by divorce, advocating for a shift towards data-driven interventions. The paper champions collaborative solutions, including shared parenting models, as vital strategies to mitigate trauma, urging legal and societal support to prioritize the child’s well-being and foster resilience in the face of family dissolution.
