ABSTRACT
Untouchability is an age-old practice in India, which has its link with the history of India. Generally, the act of untouchability is a major crime under the Indian Constitution and the laws that have been framed. Several protections have been given to the backward classes who are generally prone to any kind of act of untouchability, and therefore, these laws are aimed at ensuring better rights of these individuals. The article here has undertaken a primary quantitative data collection method using appropriate surveys to ensure better understanding of the legal framework and their efficiency in tackling the issue of untouchability in India. Individuals belonging to the backward community of India have been selected using random sampling techniques to come up with the information that is required in this direction.
The article has indicated the fact that the existing legal framework in India is appropriate, but there is a lack of implementation of the frameworks. The awareness about such frameworks is also lacking which is adding to the overall issues that are being faced.
