Pooja Somani, LL.M (International Law), UILS, Chandigarh University

ABSTRACT

“Violence against women isn’t cultural, it’s criminal. Equality cannot come eventually, it’s something we must fight for now”.1 Women’s struggle against violence has been in sight since ages even then the social menace haunts the Indian society to its core. Lately, this has been an issue of grave concern despite the fact that the Indian Government has taken numerous measures for protection of women from all forms of violence and discrimination. The status quo has raised several questions regarding the effectiveness of the international instruments which were formulated with the objective of women from domestic violence one of which was the United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) of 1979. In order to scrutinize the effectiveness of CEDAW in protection of women from violence it is indispensable to probe its impact on the Indian Society after India became a signatory to the convention. Analyzing the impact of CEDAW on Indian society forms the core of this research endeavor.
