Sonagachi And The Sex Workers In India

ABSTRACT


Recently, the Supreme Court of India recognized sex work as a profession. On the other hand, Prostitution as a profession is illegal in India. This dichotomy creates ambiguity when it comes to the rights of sex workers situated in India. The following paper discusses the problems and the situations a sex workers face by presenting relevant instance of the red-light area of Sonagachi. Furthermore, the article also provides the lacunas and possible solutions to counter and fathom the equivocation.
