Social–Legal Aspects Of The Hijab Row Controversy

Ashim Nanda & Archana Gupta, School of Law, Christ (Deemed to be University), Bangalore

Introduction

Peace and Harmony: “India has a great heritage and it is a model for religious harmony where people of different religion live peacefully and in harmony.” by Dalai Lama

Hijab, a simple and religious headscarf, worn by Muslim women to cover their head and neck, was the main component of this infamous Hijab Row controversy. Earlier in the year 2022, some Muslim girls were barred from entering a college in Udupi, Karnataka of them wearing hijab. This incident escalated quickly and soon entered the limelight and later turned into a national issue. Several hostile face-offs between the two communities; Hindus and Muslims took place at numerous educational institutions in Karnataka. The protest against the ban of Hijab intensified as the Islamic believers protested the ban on wearing hijab and on the other hand, the Hindu community students started wearing saffron scarves to depict their so-called religious symbol and their support towards the ban of Hijab.
