ABSTRACT
India has retained several legal concepts from the colonial era, one of them being the law on sedition. It was used extensively by the British and subsequently by the authorities in independent India rarely to punish the offenders and often to oppress the voices of criticism against the government. The real question is whether this law has stood the test of time or not. The controversial provisions, poor rate of conviction and the judicial precedents pretty much answer that question in the negative.
