ABSTRACT

The Panchayat Raj played a vital role in rural development in India, mainly after independence. The documents of the central and state governments and various committees have emphasised the importance of these bodies, such as the Balwant Rai Mehta Committee (1957)1, Ashok Mehta Committee (1977)2, and so on. The study includes a short history of the panchayat raj system from ancient times and the evolution of the panchayat raj system after independence. The constitutional provision provided by the Panchayat Raj system is in part IX3. The 73rd4 and 74th5 amendments brought a dramatic change in Indian administration, where the burden on the government was reduced with decentralization. Later the planning of rural development was transferred to panchayat which led the more development in the rural. This helped the better development of the rural sectors and the people who need this kind of program. The introduction of GPDP (Gram Panchayat Development Program) Sabki Yojana Sabka Vikas, has made rural development easier than before.
