ABSTRACT
The Right to Information Act, 2005 (RTI Act) is one of the most revolutionary legislations enacted in India. This act has given immense power to citizens and spurred an unprecedented drive towards transparency and accountability in governance in the country. The enactment of this legislation in a democratic country like ours, which has an established history of democracy and freedom of press, is a strong indicator that we are moving towards a more transparent system of governance. It also demonstrates our willingness to go beyond mere rhetoric, into action. The primary goal of the RTI Act is to promote transparency in the decisions taken by all levels of government as well as their subsidiary bodies. To this end, it mandates that every organization and agency that caters to government must adopt a transparent approach by making their official records accessible to public without any fee or any other form of remuneration. This includes information on policies, decisions made, finances etc., as well as tangible items like buildings or land documents. This article will delve into various aspects relating to the Right to Information (RTI) Act, its implications for democratic governance and how citizens can use it effectively to make their voices heard at various levels of government in India.
