Research On Live-In Relationships And Society

Harshit Jain, Christ Academy Institute of Law, Bangalore

Introduction

The concept of becoming companion/partners for life through the ceremony of marriage/nikah is the way that our society aspects two people to live together. Marriage is considered a sacrament in Vedas which is described as a commitment between a man and a wife for life. A marriage not only connects a man and a woman but it is a ceremony that also connects two families of the two individuals. The essence of marriage is so sacred that the law also tries to protect it end as in case of Reema Aggarwal v. Anupam1 the lordships stated that “marriage is held to be a junction of three important duties that are social, religious, and spiritual.”

With the development of society and passage of time there has been a massive diversification and evolvement in the mindset of people/society. Live-in relationships is type of relation in which there are no responsibility and obligation. Live-in relations in simple terms means when two people live together as a couple without being married to each other. Hence, it is like a marriage but not actual marriage and is an easier way to live with one-another without any marital and legal obligation cum duty towards each other though it becomes difficult when problems arise between the two.
