Reflection Paper On The Documentary: “The Cleaners”

Bhoomi Luthra, OP Jindal Global University

Introduction:

A 2018 documentary titled "The Cleaners" by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck explores the world of social media content moderation. The movie centres on the job of "cleaners," or anonymous people employed by outsourcing firms in nations like the Philippines and entrusted with analysing and eliminating objectionable and inappropriate information from prominent social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The documentary emphasises how challenging and emotionally exhausting the work is since the cleaners are routinely exposed to gory and upsetting sights and recordings. The movie also explores the difficulties and moral conundrums that come with the job of content management. The filmmakers conduct interviews with a variety of individuals involved in content moderation, including the cleaners themselves, human rights advocates, journalists, and representatives from social media firms.
