Shreeji Saraf, Amity University, Kolkata

Introduction

It has been more than 70 years since India got independent but still the woman of nation are neglected. They are not truly free and independent. Women still face many problems in India. They don't feel safe when they go alone at night. They always have a fear in their mind. There are many provisions and laws that are implemented for the safety of women. Only the implementation of laws will not help it should be properly enforced. Rape is an offence against women taking away her self-respect and dignity and when this happens within the four walls of the marriage house it reduces the status of a woman to a sexual object. Rape has been defined in section 375 of IPC but marital rape is an exception. In India marriage is regarded as the hallowed social institution. Marriage has suddenly become a license to rape. How can the Institution of marriage be termed as sacred if women are subjected to physical, mental and emotional abuse with no recourse?
