Protection Of Human Rights: Indian Scenario

Yashika Parmar, BBA LLB (Hons.), NMIMS School Of Law, Bangalore

Introduction

India is unusual among nations in that its constitution guarantees citizens their basic human rights. Civil and political liberties are protected by the law and guaranteed by basic rights. India is a signatory to a number of international treaties and conventions meant to safeguard human rights and actively participates in international efforts to do so. Foremost among these are the Civil and Political Rights Code and the Economic and Social Rights Code, both of which were enacted in 1966. In 1993, in response to rising domestic and international concerns, the Government of India enacted the Human Rights Protection Act to improve judicial administration's openness and accountability. As of January 8, 1994, it was in effect.
