Protection Of Geographical Indication In India: A Study Of Handicraft Products

Nilisha Kashwi, LL.M Student, KIIT School of Law, Bhubaneswar

ABSTRACT

Indications of geographical origin (GI) are marks applied to products that originate in a specific location and have qualities or reputations related to that location. The sign must identify a product as coming from a particular location in order to function as a GI. Moreover, the qualities, characteristics, or reputation of the product should be largely influenced by the place of origin. Due to the connection between the product and its original place of production, the quality depends on the geographical location. A country rich in variety and diversity, and more attached to its grassroots, India's handicrafts add to the beautiful culture which it has to offer. There are now very few countries left that value or pay heed to the hand-crafted creations, and India is one of them, albeit on the edge, but still holding on. In today's world, handicrafts are mostly ornamental or can be used to give as gifts, like handcrafted vases or kettles. Back then, hand-crafted items were designed and used for various purposes. The paper will deal with Geographical Indications in India and why Handicraft Products should be given protection under the Geographical Indications.
