Prostitution: A Taboo Or An Acceptance?

Anwita Maheshwari, NMIMS Kirit P. Mehta School of Law, Mumbai

ABSTRACT

When we hear the word prostitution, the first thing that comes to our mind is the nature of the work. People are gradually becoming aware of what was once a social taboo. A recent Supreme Court order is one such step toward treating sex work as any other work. This article discusses the difference in opinions of people about sex work and how the views of the minority cannot be considered wrong. Furthermore, it analysed the global perspective of people on prostitution and compared it with the situation in India. It throws light on the legal aspects of sex work and the failure of the law to protect these prostitutes. Moreover, why this profession is considered immoral is also discussed in this article. Lastly, some recommendations are provided to uplift the status of prostitutes in society and to treat them as we treat other professionals.

Keywords: Immoral, Minority, Sex work, Status, Taboo.
