Polluter-Pays Principle

Aarcha Vijayan, Durham University, UK

ABSTRACT

The environment is a vital gift for human survival, but its optimal utilization without greed and with concern is a significant challenge. Humans are harming nature through over-exploitation, disregarding the consequences. The Polluter-pay principle holds those responsible for this harm accountable, aiming to internalize the environmental costs. However, its implementation faces many challenges. For instance, estimating the extent of nature’s damage, such as the long-term effects of oil spills or deforestation, is extremely difficult. Beyond this, numerous other limitations hinder the effective implementation of the polluter-pay principle. Therefore, a collective and coordinated effort from every individual is essential to combat the environmental damage and ensure a sustainable future.
