Police Reforms: Need Of The Hour

Harshita, LLM, SRM University Sonepat, Delhi NCR

ABSTRACT

The idea of Police Reform can be approached in two ways. One is to think of reforms that can take place within the existing police system and the other is to look at reforms that require changes in the existing system. The first approach itself can produce a lengthy list, including the need for reform in areas like recruitment, training, service and living conditions; career planning; effective and honest leadership at different levels; improved infrastructure and other resources, etc. The second approach to police reform involves setting up of new control and accountability mechanisms that will help in insulating the police from wrong and illegitimate control but simultaneously make them accountable for their performance and behaviour.
