ABSTRACT
In a democratic society, press freedom plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights. However, striking a balance between press freedom and national security is a challenge that governments around the world grapple with. Such a challenge is particularly evident in India, where the Official Secrets Act (OSA) has been a subject of debate and scrutiny. This paper aims to delve into the historical context, evolution, impact, and potential reforms of the OSA, shedding some light on its role in safeguarding national security while also addressing concerns regarding freedom of the press and democratic principles.
