ABSTRACT
The growing usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in India, particularly for agriculture, surveillance and e-commerce, requires a comprehensive set of rules and guidelines. This article seeks to evaluate India’s gradual journey in this direction, starting from the Drone Regulation 1.0 of 2018 and peaking with the Drone Rules of 2021, and determine what is left to be done in order to better facilitate its use within the country. However, these are achievements in their own right, and it is equally critical to highlight the areas that remain underdeveloped to date — airworthiness incorporation, privacy includes, and international integration. Many requirements have been made significantly easier for the user with the development of the Digital Sky platform and account registration.
Further, to perforate in world UAV market of global standards, India must move towards implementing real time vigorous enforcement to ensure compliance. The seamless integration of drone technology into the Indian economy is a strong statement of India's capabilities, but without adequately addressing these problem areas, India’s aspirations of becoming a world leader in drone capabilities will remain just that.
