Navigating The Cosmos: Exploring The Legal And Administrative Aspects Of Modern Space Operations

Tripti Mishra, Vijaybhoomi University, Maharashtra

Introduction:

From a simple interest, space exploration has developed into a vital field for commercial, strategic, and scientific endeavors. It is impossible to exaggerate the significance of space operations in the modern world. Recognizing the critical role that legal frameworks play in managing these cosmic endeavors becomes vital as we stand on the brink of an era where space is not just the final frontier but also an expanding frontier.

The purview of government space organizations has not limited space operations. These days, an increasing number of countries, commercial enterprises, and international partnerships actively engage in a variety of activities, from satellite launches to large-scale manned missions. A combination of national security concerns, economic potential, and scientific curiosity is propelling the expansion of space activities. Strong and thorough legal frameworks are more important than ever when space exploration experiences an unparalleled upsurge.

There are several ways in which legal frameworks are important for space exploration. These frameworks, first and foremost, set the guidelines for interactions between states and other entities that travel into space. In the absence of a defined legal framework, there may be uncertainty, disputes, and a "wild west" situation in space. A key document in this respect is the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which established fundamental guidelines for both the peaceful use of space and the prohibition against its exploitation for military purposes.
