ABSTRACT


Exploring the legal intricacies of Live- in relationship in India, this study analyses the evolving landscape shaped by societal, governmental, and cultural dynamics. Delving into the rights and responsibilities within live-in unions, with a specific focus on LGBTQ+ couples, it dissects marriage-like statuses, property distribution intricacies, and broader legal rights associated with cohabitation. Examining the influence of cultural norms, religious perspectives, and governmental policies on the acceptance of live-in relationships, the research critically evaluates changing attitudes in Indian society towards cohabitation. Addressing positive aspects and challenges, it explores domestic violence, consent-related issues, and societal stigma. The research expands its scope to cover inheritance rights, the legal status of children born within live-in relationships, and broader societal implications, with special to the Indian Constitution. This study decodes the legal complexities surrounding live-in relationships in Mumbai, offering insights into diverse relational configurations in the contemporary societal landscape, empowering citizens to navigate and understand these relationships.
