ABSTRACT
One of the most vulnerable sectors for need of mental health consideration is still the most neglected ones: Prisoners in India. This paper will describe and analyse the rates at which the mental health cases in prisons are escalating and reasons for the same. The Author will try to understand the state and international laws for dealing with this issue and how it has evolved in the modern times.
Post covid, most of the people understand how living inside four walls, not interacting with a lot of people and continuous urge to go out can pressurize the minds of human beings. Psychological disorders, depression and in some cases, suicidal tendencies are some of the common traits that are observed in the periods of confinement. Through this paper, the author will attempt to scrutinize, analyze and review the causes and effects of this worsening mental stability of prisoners in India.
To deal with the problem, the author will firstly accumulate the drawbacks of current prison system and further, how it could be developed. Finally, the paper will delve into finding legal, moral and systematical solutions for identification and treatment of mental disorders in prison cells.
