Marine Pollution In India - Legal Analysis

ABSTRACT

India is a country of vast and rich biodiversity with a unique identity. The varied ecosystem and biodiversity along with grasslands, wetlands, freshwater, and marine serve as a major economic source of the country. The land which is surrounded by ocean in its three side is also a country of rich maritime tradition. Life began in the oceans and it remains our link to life through its control of climate, provision of food and minerals, sequestration of carbon, assimilation of waste and other precious services.1 Ocean is infinitely vast which is capable of absorbing and recycling waste of human society but due to increased human activity, urbanisation, industrialisation, improper management of ports, oil spills, accidents, discharge of waste from vessel and dumping of hazardous waste etc are imposing serious ecological disaster to marine environment. Marine pollution and combating marine pollution are becoming significant nowadays. This paper ties to analyse the legal regime in India and also at international arena relating to marine pollution which address the land and vessel based solid waste and waste generated due to sea bed activities.
