Marine Pollution: An Analysis

S.Vedhavalli, LLM, Dr Ambedrar Law University, Chennai

ABSTRACT

The ocean has often turned into a garbage dump. Numerous millions of tonnes of trash wind up in the ocean. The United Nations Environmental Programme estimates that in just one year, up to 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastic entered the ocean. Oil spills cause random deaths. More than 14 different species of whales and dolphins were affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, and more than 5,000 of these magnificent animals perished. Marine development, military sonar, oil and gas drilling, and ship noise all disrupt whale and dolphin communication, hinder their ability to find food, and raise their stress levels. Their reproductive capacity and immune systems are affected by elevated stress levels.

Keywords: Pollution, Convention, Environment and Agriculture, Marine ecosystem.
