Lifting The Veil: Female Genital Mutilation A Benefaction Or An Affliction?

ABSTRACT


Female Genital Mutilation has been in practice for centuries but is barely talked about. The process involves cutting or stitching up of the clitoris for purposes of purity and curbing any sexual desires that a girl may have. Female Genital Mutilation has no benefits to it, all the negative implications point towards it. In this article we delve deep into the ill of female genital mutilation, we will look at the efforts which are being made by the UN and governments of various countries, India being one. The practice is not as prevalent across all of India but is widely practiced among the Bhora Community of Mumbai. This article will help us understand the standing of this practice in India amongst many other ills and the physical, psychological implications will also be discussed to provide a clear cut picture and answer the question whether FGM is A Benefaction or An Affliction?
