ABSTRACT
India possesses a long coastline with a variety of intricate ecosystems. The coastal ecology and the maritime environment are immediately impacted by commercial activity, urbanisation, industrialization, and dependent people all occurring at the same time. The Indian government indicated interest in marine and coastal conservation during the Eleventh Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This paper describes the legal foundation for "protected areas" in international coastal and marine regions, as well as the steps involved and the consequences of establishing such areas. The current legal system pertaining to coastal regions is quite disjointed, with several departments and agencies. This state of affairs has occasionally been exacerbated by legislative delegation, judicial interpretations, and the development of national policy. This paper tries to find and analyse the initiatives of India with regard to protection of international marine environment.
