Land Squeeze And Inequality: An Analysis Of Fragmentation And Land Reform Legislation In India

Rithu T, BA LLB (Hons.), School of Excellence in Law, TNDALU

ABSTRACT

In this paper, I analyse the challenges of land squeeze, fragmentation, and inequality in post-independence India. It examines the effects of urbanization, industrialization, and climate change on the ground. This research critically evaluates how the outcomes of land reforms-the tenancy reforms and land consolidation policies, for instance-influence agricultural productivity and socio-economic stability. This paper based on the analysis of landmark judgments of the Supreme Court explains the successes as well as the failure of land reform programs, regional variations in such implementation, and factors causing continuing problems of land inequality. It also ends by proposing policy responses which would include issues of land titling, sustainable agricultural practices, and better implementations of the reform as necessary for land equity and to check fragmentation.
