Navya Saxena, Centre for Legal Studies, Gitarattan International Business School, GGSIPU.

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the challenges and solutions related to labour standards and worker protection in the gig economy. As this new form of employment, characterized by short-term contracts and freelance work facilitated by digital platforms, continues to expand, it introduces both opportunities and vulnerabilities for workers. The study highlights critical issues such as the classification of gig workers as independent contractors, which often excludes them from essential labour protections and benefits. It advocates for the empowerment of gig workers through collective bargaining and improved transparency. The Code on Social Security 2020 is examined as a legislative framework aimed at providing social security benefits to gig workers in India.
