ABSTRACT
Marriages in India are still considered as one of the most important social institution in the society. With the modernisation in the society there is an increase in the Interfaith marriages, these are where individuals from different religious backgrounds unite in matrimony, often present unique socio-legal challenges in India. This paper will analyse the legal framework governing interfaith marriages, examining relevant laws, case studies, and the sociocultural impact. It will be focusing on the key legal instruments such as the Special Marriage Act, 1954, and discusses various case laws that have shaped judicial thinking on the subject. Additionally, we shall also be addressing the emerging challenges, including state-enacted anti-conversion laws, and considers the balancing act between personal laws and constitutional rights.
