Impact Of Social Media On Intellectual Property Rights

Currently, in the era of advanced technology, social media has become an essential component of our everyday existence. These platforms have a vast user base globally and function as a potent tool for communicating, sharing information, and creating content. Nevertheless, the exponential expansion of social media has facilitated the extensive distribution of intellectual property, prompting apprehensions regarding copyright violation and the safeguarding of innovative creations. Intellectual property rights (IPR) are legal rights given to inventors and owners of intangible goods, such as inventions, artistic works, brand names, trademarks, and designs. Although social media platforms have facilitated the process of connecting individuals and allowing them to share their creations with a larger audience, they have also contributed to the emergence of problems related to the unauthorised utilisation and dissemination of copyrighted materials.

Intellectual Property Rights and Social Media:

Social media involves the digital interaction between individuals and the sharing of content created by users. As per the definition provided by the Cambridge English dictionary, social media refers to websites and computer programmes that enable individuals to communicate and exchange information on the internet through a computer or mobile phone. However, the pertinent inquiry that arises in this context is whether the material and information disseminated on social media platforms is safeguarded. Is theft from social media non-existent? Let's consider the scenario where Mr. A, utilising his imaginative abilities, creates a painting and shares it on social media. The concern that emerges here is whether the painting is protected from theft on social media, and if Mr. A receives appreciation for creating the painting or if someone else exploits it for their own gain. A similar concern emerges in the business world, as social media has become the dominant force in almost all commercial activities. Whether it is marketing a new product or creating business prospects, social media plays a crucial role.
