Impact Of AI On Legal Practitioners

Bency John Thomas, Christ (Deemed to be University) Delhi NCR

ABSTRACT:

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the legal profession is effecting a significant transformation of traditional legal practices, reshaping roles and introducing complex ethical and professional challenges. This paper explores the impact of AI on legal practitioners, with a particular focus on how technologies such as natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) facilitate tasks including document review, case prediction, and legal research, thereby enhancing efficiency and improving access to legal services.

However, the increasing reliance on AI also raises pertinent ethical concerns, such as the potential for bias, the erosion of human judgment, and challenges to confidentiality and accountability within legal practices. This research is informed by studies conducted by Alarie, Niblett, and Yoon (2018), as well as Remus and Levy (2017), which examine the dual impact of AI: its capacity to enhance productivity and the risks it poses to fundamental professional values.

Through case studies and qualitative interviews with legal practitioners, this paper underscores the necessity for balanced regulatory frameworks that can address these challenges. Such frameworks are essential to ensure the responsible use of AI in legal practice, promoting both innovation and strict adherence to ethical standards.
