ABSTRACT
This study explores the intricate relationship between mental illness and criminal responsibility, highlighting the legal and ethical implications inherent in this dynamic. It explores how mental health disorders can influence in criminal actions, thereby challenging conventional ideas of guilt and accountability. By analyzing relevant case law and legislative frameworks, the research delineates the criteria used to assess criminal responsibility in individuals with mental illnesses, focusing on standards such as the McNaghten Rules and their application in various jurisdictions. Additionally, the paper addresses the ethical implications of involuntary commitment and treatment, highlighting the need for a balanced strategy while ensuring public safety. By thoroughly exploring these topics, this study aims to enhance the ongoing discussion regarding mental health and for reforms that acknowledge the complexities of mental illness and foster more equitable treatment outcomes.
