Health Insurance In India: Need For Obamacare Model Of Health Insurance?

Ipshita Gupta, Bennett University

INTRODUCTION

Obamacare Health policy or Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was implemented with the aim to provide reasonable medical insurance to the locals, to decrease the cost of health care and related services and therefore, increase the quality of health care and insurance in US. It was seen that the Act had some positive and some negative impact on the population of U.S at large.

Now if we look at India’s health insurance schemes which include various types of government subsidised schemes, private voluntary schemes, social health insurance schemes and study their effectiveness, it can be seen that a considerable portion of the population remains uncovered under existing health care coverage plans. Therefore, it becomes necessary to analyse whether a scheme like Obamacare which will enable each individual to have access to health insurance must be introduced in India.
