ABSTRACT

Women are disproportionately affected by gender-based crimes, which are a result of gender disparities and harm anybody who is viewed as not conforming with existing gender standards. Gender-based crimes are a consequence of gender inequalities. In many cases, those who commit acts of gender-based hatred do so in an effort to silence and frighten others who live their lives or display their identities in a manner that deviates from socially expected patterns. They leave victims emotionally and psychologically scarred, and they perpetuate gender inequality, which in turn weakens security and social cohesiveness. The fact that these kinds of acts occur demonstrates a broader pattern of prejudice. To combat this and other types of bigotry, everyone must do their part.

In many parts of the globe, women are victims of violent crime. Women are vulnerable to victimisation from the moment they enter the world, often even before they give birth. Domestic violence, sexual assault, homicide, and even female foeticide are all too common crimes committed against women. As a consequence of centuries-old gender inequality, males are more likely to perpetrate acts like dowry murder and honour killings. Pregnancy testing equipment may lead to female foeticide if a culture's desire for boys is known even before birth. The prevalence of sexual harassment against young women is widespread. The emotional and physical abuse meted out by husbands and in-laws to their wives is widespread. They are exploited in the workplace and denied access to basic medical care after giving birth. Many laws exist to protect women from violence, sexual assault, and other forms of mistreatment, and to prevent women from engaging in exploitative work such as prostitution or pornography.
