Gender Disparity And Oppression Faced By Women Construction Workers In India

Vaishnav Arun Kumar, BBA LLB, OP Jindal Global Law School

IS THERE AN EXISTING GENDER BIAS?

With respect to the research regarding women being employed in construction sites, there is a repeat on the type of questions that come up during the research done. The questions involve the lack of implementation of laws, issues faced in the professional outwork, physical insecurity, the unacceptable living conditions, the overall management between the work assigned and household work. All these factors have led to women workers suffering various levels of oppression and discrimination. When looking at the overall scenario, a person even before getting into the numbers, case studies and research can understand the level of suffering faced by women in these rough conditions. The entire model is built on a discriminatory level and the chauvinist view of the men in charge have led to a situation that shows a lack of assistance provided to women. The only answer to this situation is to break the entire model from its core and ensure the view that women are to be shown equal importance during important decisions made. Equality is not the same as equity as there needs to be certain conditions that need to be provided in their work contracts such as proper implementation of maternity leave rules, proper hygiene products provided and effective usage of creche facilities. Supervisors in the construction sector must be directed to follow rules and guidelines that ensure that respect every gender present in the sector.
