Farm Laws 2020: An Analysis

Aryaman Dubey, BML Munjal University

Introduction

There had a been numerous intensive debates on the Farm Laws 2020. There were three laws and they aimed to liberalize the agriculture sector and provide with more freedom and flexibility to sell their produce.

But before the enforcement of these laws, they had faced furious opposition from the several farmers unions from different parts of the country who had stated that this new enactment will lead to the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system and leave farmers vulnerable to exploitation by big corporations.

Through the article titled “Property Rules, Liability Rules, and Inalienability: One View of the Cathedral written by Guido Calabresi and A. Douglas Melamed” .

In this paper, I will analyze the “Farm Laws 2020 ”from an economist's perspective, focusing on the relation between property rules and liability rules to MSP and how the bills created a shift from a liability rule to a property rule.
