ABSTRACT
False confessions represent a significant and troubling issue within the criminal justice system, arising when individuals wrongfully admit to crimes they did not commit. These confessions are often the result of a combination of psychological pressure, environmental stressors, and procedural missteps during the interrogation process. Such confessions not only lead to wrongful convictions but also undermine the overall integrity of legal proceedings, casting doubt on the fairness and accuracy of criminal justice outcomes. This project delves into the various causes that contribute to false confessions, including the application of excessive psychological pressure during interrogations, the vulnerability of certain individuals—such as juveniles or those with cognitive impairments—and procedural failures, such as inadequate legal representation or the use of coercive interrogation techniques. The stages through which false confessions typically unfold are also analysed, from the initial misclassification of an innocent suspect to the use of psychological coercion, and ultimately the contamination and internalization of false information. Furthermore, this project examines several strategies aimed at preventing false confessions, emphasizing the need for improved and humane interrogation techniques, robust legal safeguards, and enhanced law enforcement training. By developing a comprehensive understanding of the factors that lead to false confessions and implementing preventive measures, we can reduce their occurrence, protect the innocent, and ultimately promote greater fairness and integrity within the justice system.
