Drug Abuse: An Insight

Srishti Sonkar, LLM Criminal Law/Amity Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Amity University, Noida Uttar Pradesh

ABSTRACT

Analyzing the escalating issue of adolescent drug abuse in India requires a comprehensive comprehension and focused intervention. A demographic analysis reveals that ninety percent of drug abusers are under the age of twenty-five, highlighting the grave consequences of drug abuse in our communities. The repercussions transcend personal welfare, establishing a correlation with delinquent conduct and a surge in the prevalence of abhorrent offenses like rape, sexual assault, and homicide; they paint an ominous portrait of societal turmoil. A distressing statistic reveals that approximately 75% of the youth in Punjab are grappling with severe dependence on narcotics, contributing to the gravity of the addiction crisis in India. Cities such as Mumbai and Hyderabad have emerged as prominent hubs, concurrently experiencing a surge in drug-related activities, which underscores the pervasive issue of drug abuse within the nation.
