ABSTRACT
Organ donation is a process of having an organ removed from one person, known as donor and surgically implanted into another (the recipient) whose organ has failed. Over the past few years there has been increased awareness for organ donation after death. Sadly, there is a considerably higher need for organ donors than there are genuine donors for fulfilling the required needs. The idea of organ transplantation is not a very new concept. The idea and existence of such transplantation and organ donation can also be traced in Indian mythology. Due to the widening imbalance between the demand and availability for human organs over the past few decades, it has taken on increased importance for public health. This article discusses in detail the law in India, current situation and multiple factors affecting the same. Further, the article also discusses the views and practises of different religion with regards to organ donation and also presents a global comparison. Organ transplantation must be viewed as a modern medical innovation that enables one person to give the gift of life to another, rather than as an illustration of all that is unethical and commercial.
