ABSTRACT
The article emphasizes the importance of recognizing and protecting the human rights of senior citizens within the broader context of universal human rights. It acknowledges the increasing global aging population and the need to address the specific needs and challenges faced by older individuals. The United Nations Principles for Older Persons and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing are highlighted as key international frameworks promoting the rights of seniors. Despite global efforts, the practical realization of senior citizens' rights remains challenging, particularly in regions with socio-economic disparities and high levels of illiteracy, such as India. The article calls for a more systematic and comprehensive approach by governments and policymakers to actively protect and uphold the rights of older individuals. Education is identified as a crucial tool in empowering senior citizens, emphasizing the need for initiatives that promote digital literacy, provide accessible information, and raise awareness through community campaigns. Additionally, targeted policy interventions are recommended to address healthcare disparities, social isolation, and elder abuse. The article concludes by stressing the importance of a cultural shift to value and recognize the contributions of older individuals within families and communities, promoting intergenerational understanding and cooperation for a more supportive societal framework.
