Madhura Gore, Modern Law College, Pune

ABSTRACT

Since the beginning of the 1970s, environmental problems, which concern several fields and occur in many spatial dimensions, have been gaining more and more attention worldwide. Environmental issues have been raised at many international conferences and in intergovernmental discussions. In India, environmental concerns first emerged in the late 1970s. Initially, numerous constitutional amendments were adopted to protect the environment. Over the years, a number of laws and policies have been enacted to protect the environment. The use of public interest litigation has grown over time and environmental awareness has significantly increased the number of PILs filed each year. This article focuses on the role that PIL has played in the development of Indian environmental laws.
