Development And Displacement – A Case For People Affected By Varanasi Corridor Project

Shivani Riya, School of Law, Lovely Professional University

ABSTRACT

Every human being has an intrinsic right to life which will be protected by the law. No one with the sense of arbitrariness be deprived of life. Internally displaced persons, in particular, are protected from summary or arbitrary killings and enforced disappearances, such as abduction or unacknowledged detention, which may threaten or result in death. Development is a positive obligation of the state for the benefit of its citizens, but what good is it if it ignores basic human rights to life and livelihood? Displacement induced by development projects as a result of economic and other issues is causing increased concern. All urban projects, such as dams, mines, corridors, motorways, or protected area designations, disturb the lives of the people who reside in the vicinity and often necessitate their migration to a new location. In this context, the current study examines the notion of land acquisition and its relationship to development, displacement, and displaced people's rights. In addition, the study will focus on the current people who have been displaced as a result of the Varanasi kasha Vishwanath Corridor project. The impact of land purchases on displaced people has also been studied, as well as inadequacies in the existing legal framework.
