Devadasi: The God’s Prostitute

Agrini Rawal, Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan Degree College, Baghpat

ABSTRACT

Right to Equality is guaranteed by Indian Constitutional Article 14 and is equally applicable to the current devadasi system, which must be abolished. Devadasi literally translates to "God's female servant" (Dasi). The Devadasi system is an old religious ritual in which parents marry their young daughters to the deity due to their poor economic circumstances, but her virginity is auctioned off to strong men and temple priests.

These devadasi eventually grow into prostitutes who live in abject poverty and die a horrific end due to AIDS or other diseases in modern times. Worst of all is the predicament of devadasi children, who are eventually mutilated and robbed of their right to a dignified existence as any other child. As a result, there is a pressing requirement at this time.
