Mehak Chadha, Advocate, Panjab And Haryana High Court (B.A. Llb, Llm)

ABSTRACT

"I would boycott that legislature which will not have a proper share of women members”. These words of Mahatma Gandhi hold immense importance in today’s world. Women's empowerment entails raising their prominence in the family, community, and society. It guarantees that women have access to contemporary development facilities and increases their involvement in social, economic, and political decision-making processes. As a corollary, women's empowerment is critical in India. Gender justice is a significant government commitment that needs serious deliberation based on consensus among all political parties. In the latter decade of the twentieth century, the issue of women's political empowerment gained traction across the world. Despite the fact that the Indian Constitution stipulates equal opportunity, women's presence in legislative bodies and political engagement at all levels is minimal. Women still have only de jure rather than de facto access to these rights. Participation of women in politics at decision making level may bring manifold impact in empowering women in all spheres and it will magnify their voices ensuring that they rise above all the atrocities and discrimination. The ability to combat women's deprivation in all of its forms is hampered by their absence from political stances. Women need to be represented fairly in politics at all tiers. Women, who make up over half of the population, must be adequately represented in decision-making bodies; this will be achievable only if a larger number of women take an active interest in representing society's weaker and disadvantaged segments. In absence of this parity, and as a result of this exclusion, the aim of social development with equality and justice would be impossible to accomplish, and as a result, women's participation in Indian politics will be a long way distant.
