Pratik Waingankar, LL.B., Thakur Ramnarayan College of Law, Mumbai University, India

ABSTRACT:

Deepfake technology, a product of artificial intelligence, has sparked major legal and ethical concerns globally. This paper delves into the legal aspects of deepfakes in India. It begins with a thorough review of global discussions on deepfake regulations and compares them to India's current situation. The paper explores real-life examples of deepfake incidents, shedding light on how the law has responded and what happened as a result. It also takes a close look at the ethical debates surrounding deepfakes, particularly in areas like privacy, defamation, and digital identity theft. In the discussion section, the study combines findings from the literature review and case studies, offering insights into how well India's existing laws handle deepfake challenges. The paper concludes by considering possible changes in the law to better address this growing technological concern. It highlights the urgent need to protect privacy, prevent misuse, and uphold the integrity of digital content as deepfake technology becomes more prevalent in India.
