ABSTRACT
Cybersecurity can be essential to national security, economic stability, and personal privacy in the way our world is interconnected today. This is the reason strong policies on cybersecurity need to be in place, given the ever-increasing level of sophisticated cyber threats. Indeed, these policies are meant to secure personal information and critical infrastructure, implying that digital serviced integrity is guaranteed. However, legislation on cyberspace can raise uncomfortable questions because it is going to show a balancing act between national security and individual privacy. The article delineates the legal commitments, obligations, and implications of the cyber-security policies in place and how they manage to strike a balance between national security on one hand and private life—only that it is very delicate. Key points that are discussed in this literature include duties that companies have under different cyber security frameworks, what a complex task it is to define responsibility in case there are cyber incidents, and how individual privacy rights would be affected as a consequence of such measures against intrusion or hacking. Therefore, this article raises the various implementation problems of these rules and regulations, and tough legal aspects that make it hard to put them into action. Recommendations to enhance global cooperation, increase investment in cyber protection structures, and to make law frameworks more adaptive to new technologies are the last section of this chapter.
