ABSTRACT
Whenever we talk about the role of Police in our lives the first thought that pops in our mind is that of someone who has the responsibility of protecting the public. Not only in India but also ar ound the world the Police Organization is considered to be the most important organ of the government that takes the responsibility of the public welfare and protection and therefore people have immense faith in the police organization. This is one side of the story, where the Police is considered to be the protector of public. But what if the other side says totally different story? It is often noticed that when one is authorized certain powers they are bound to misuse them and police is no different from this example.
The other side that people often choose to ignore or refuse to believe is the bitter truth of the Police Department and that is Custodial Torture which is considered to be the harsh reality of police today. Not only in India but almost in all the countries there are cases of Custodial torture that takes place.
This Article focuses on the following areas of research
1] What is Custodial torture? 2] Reasons behind the increasing cases of Custodial torture? 3] Landmark Cases of Custodial torture. 4] Reforms made so far in Police Administration.
