Crime Statistics: Variables, Accountability & Social Damage

Ishaan Deepak Joshi, MIT-WPU, Faculty of Law

ABSTRACT

Similar to previous times, contemporaryconversations about crime disregard or misrepresent statistics on crime in order increase general dread, ethnic conflict, and sabotage law enforcement changes which encourage lengthy, sustainability of security for all. Unsubstantiated crime accounts impede our ability to comprehend the variables responsible for the recent spike in violent crime as well as weaken our attempts to invest in resolutions supported by empirical proof. Misdiagnosing the root causes of criminality jeopardises the security of the public, which is comparable when medical professional incorrectly diagnoses a patient with the wrong malady and consequentially administers improper medication, thereby failing to address the root problem while aggravating the illness of the individual. Fostering public safety is a critical endeavour that necessitates precise, comprehensive investigation, not misinformation created to incite dread and fury. Crime constitutes an intricate and diverse phenomenon, and any responses must be based on data, equity, and justice. Inaccurate assessments are crucial, lest deceptive statements and twisted data worsen law enforcement's efficacy, further leading to social damage.
